Desert of Errors
Leo Caobelli
10 Desertos de Erros (10 Deserts of Errors) is a collaborative digital platform project developed through the archeology of obsolete media, manifested here from a group of 200 HDs discarded as electronic waste. The project was selected by Rumos Itaú Cultural 2019-2020 and launched on September 30, 2022. All original recovered images were reworked to guarantee the anonymity of their owners.
By buying a hard drive, you expect to buy storage space. Little do you know that you are buying time. You might even be buying this new disk to replace one that has just become obsolete. Like every mass-consumer technological device, this hard drive comes loaded with a must-have factory item: a fail-safe clock. And yes, invariably you will lose. You will lose the birth, vacation, party photos. You will miss the income tax return, the master's thesis, the project that was due next Monday. You will lose. These are biased data. It dispels the fog, there is no part of the sky, the cloud, there is no digital ether, there you buy time in the other's space. There is, however, something liberating about playing a losing game and embracing the inevitability of defeat, failure, shipwreck. There is no backup for dreams. Keep your folders organized. Dice roll.
